UNN TO COLLABORATE WITH HOWARD UNIVERSITY


The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bartholomew N. Okolo, on his recent visit to Maryland, USA has taken advantage to meet with the management and faculty of Howard University, Washington DC on Friday, August 16, 2013 to discuss the modalities for establishing academic collaborations between the two universities. Those who met with the Vice-Chancellor include the Provost and Chief Academic Officer, Professor Wayne A. I. Fredrick; Senior Academic Adviser to Howard University President, Dr. Alvin Thornton; Dean of the College of Pharmacy, Dr. Anthony Wutoh; Dean of the College of Medicine, Dr. Mark Johnson and Dean of the College of Nursing and Allied Sciences, Dr Mary Hill.


The meetings started with presentations by both universities during which they highlighted their respective strengths and accomplishments. Thereafter, discussions were held on the interests and needs of both universities. At the end of the various discussions, both universities agreed to collaborate in the fields of pharmaceutical sciences, medicine, nursing sciences, dentistry and law.
The collaborations, as solicited by the Vice-Chancellor, would include staff and student exchanges, joint workshops and conferences, shared curricula and joint grant applications. Both parties are currently working on the memorandum of understanding which will be signed in the near future. Entering into such a relationship with Howard University is significant in the sense that the founder of University of Nigeria, Hon. (Dr.) Nnamdi Azikiwe, was an alumnus of Howard University. The Vice Chancellor was accompanied on the trip by Professor Anene Moneke (Senior Special Assistant to the Vice Chancellor on Projects & Head, Department of Microbiology), Professor Ben Ogwo (Director, Centre for Technical Vocational Education, Training and Research, CETVETAR), Dr. Bennett Nwanguma (Senior Special Assistant to the Vice Chancellor on Special Duties)
